I was also honored to be chosen as a judge for the 2022 SOVAS, the voice-over industry’s highest awards event that is similar to the Oscars, Emmys, and Tonys.
How I discovered VoiceOver
Imagine losing your "secure" management job, your girlfriend, and your self-esteem all in the same day. It happened to me. I thought I was living the life, managing one of the hottest nightclubs in town, surrounded by celebrities and business moguls. But one day, the owner decided to take the club in a different direction, and I was suddenly out of a job. To make matters worse, my girlfriend also wanted to move on. It felt like everything was falling apart.
With a new expensive apartment and limited savings, panic set in. However, I've come to realize that in times of great despair, we often find the greatest opportunities for growth. It was a wake-up call for me to reevaluate my life, my choices, and my aspirations.
I had been trying to break into the acting industry with little success. With 15 years of nightclub experience but no other marketable skills, I knew my days in the nightlife industry were numbered as I grew older. Desperate for a side hustle to sustain myself while pursuing acting, I had an epiphany. Voiceover work had always fascinated me since my childhood, where I would imitate voices from cartoons and video games. Extensive research revealed that while the animation and video game industry were heavily guarded, there was a HUGE market for voiceover in commercials, explainer videos, eLearning, and corporate and industrial videos. Not only was it easier to break into, but I could work directly with clients from the comfort of my own home studio.
With rent and bills looming, I embarked on a journey. I rented the necessary equipment from a local music shop, set up a "make-shift" recording space, and devoted countless hours to learning the ins and outs of the voiceover industry. The rest, as they say, is history.
I managed to secure another nightclub management job, but within 3 months, I didn't even need it anymore. I was making more money than ever before in my life. With newfound confidence, my acting career began to flourish. I even had the means to move to New York City during the pandemic, where I met the love of my life. Together, we celebrated her birthday in Italy.
